Bruno Coelho’s sensational show at the IFMAR Worlds!

The Portuguese Xray / NOSRAM driver stirred up the who is who of international touring car racing and finished second behind Naoto Matsukura and ahead of Ronald Völker.

Kissimmee, Florida was host of the 2014 IFMAR ISTC World Championship. The organizers had prepared a very technical track layout with good grip. Weather conditions were tough for drivers and equipment, with high humidity and temperatures up to 33°C, while the asphalt was heating up to more than 50°C.
Almost 100 drivers from all over the world were attending the biennial highlight of electric touring car racing. All of the top drivers of the scene had travelled to the US to compete for the most prestigious title in this class. Newly crowned 1/12 World Champion Marc Rheinard, reigning TC World Champion Jilles Groskamp, European Champion Ronald Völker, Alex Hagberg, Viktor Wilck, Meen Vejrak as well as Japanese stars Atsushi Hara and Naoto Matsukura to name only a few made it a first-class lineup.   
This year’s world championship saw racing on the absolute top level. It was not only a rendezvous of the best drivers – they also showed their best performance. In this context, the showing of young Portuguese Xray / NOSRAM driver Bruno Coelho is even more impressing! You even may call it a fairy tale. One year ago, widely unknown Bruno qualified to the A-main of the EFRA Euros. No one took really notice of this result, as it was his home track where he had practiced hours and hours. Earlier this year, Bruno secured the TQ spot at the EFRA Euros in Madrid ahead of Ronald Völker and Marc Rheinard – the best touring car drivers in the world. Then, he came to Florida. While most of his competitors and pre-event favorites had attended the pre-Worlds event and other practices, Bruno turned his first laps on the track at the beginning of the Worlds.  
Nevertheless, Bruno Coelho was among the top drivers from the beginning! Qualification turned out to be a tight and epic battle with Naoto Matsukura, Ronald Völker and Bruno winning two heats each. The resulting starting order for the finals was Naoto ahead of Ronald and Bruno on third. But the qualifying was only the opener for a real thriller. Going into A1, TQ driver Naoto made a small mistake resulting in his car rolling. His Yokomo teammate Ronald wasn’t able to brake anymore and touched Naoto’s car. Bruno kept cool, overtook both and defended the lead until the end. He won ahead of Marc Rheinard, Naoto Matsukura and Ronald Völker. Now, a total happy end of his unbelievable story seemed to be realistic. The top three finished the second final in the order of qualification, resulting in the title still being an option for Bruno. At the beginning of A3, the young Portuguese made a mistake that put him back to fifth, but he fought back and overtook Viktor Wilck and Marc Rheinard. He was even able to close in on the two leaders, but it was too late to attack. Ronald and Naoto performed the fastest final with the Japanese winning by a hair in the end.   
Naoto Matsukura took the World Champion title with two victories, while Bruno Coelho finished on a sensational and unexpected second place by winning one final and crossing the line third twice. Ronald Völker completed the podium with two second places. Bruno who? After these Worlds no one in the scene will ever ask this question again.  
Bruno Coelho’s driving performance was just awesome. In addition, he could rely on perfect equipment. He powered his Xray touring car with NOSRAM comet HD speed control, NOSRAM pure 2 brushless motor and NOSRAM x-treme race 6000 LiPo battery. Without having any technical issues over the whole event, Bruno could fully concentrate on his driving.
